Smirthwaite Corner Chair – Floor Sitting with Someone at Your Back and Both Sides

Children learn to sit on the floor, surrounded by toys and other children. A child who is still finding their balance falls backward or sideways the moment they reach too far or get distracted, and after a few falls they stop reaching. The Smirthwaite Corner Chair is a padded floor seat that wraps behind and beside the child, so they can lean, reach, and look around without going over. A pommel between the knees keeps the legs apart for a wide, stable base.

The side wings adjust in height and angle, the headrest adjusts in height and width, and the pommel slides forward and back, so a therapist can set exactly as much support as the child needs today and dial it back as balance improves. A Velcro pelvic strap is included. Three sizes cover roughly 8 months to 12 years, all rated to 187 lb, and an optional table tray turns it into a place to eat, draw, and play.

Made in England by Smirthwaite with Levitex foam under wipe-clean vinyl. Blue in stock; 13 other colors at no extra charge. Two-year warranty.

  • Home use where the child wants to be on the floor with siblings

Choosing a Size

Sizes 1 and 2 share the same seat (15.7" wide, 11.8" deep); Size 2 is simply taller, for a longer torso. Size 3 is wider and deeper for school-age children. Measure the child's hip width seated and the distance from the seat to the top of the shoulders, then pick the size where the back comes to at least shoulder height with room to grow. As a rough age guide: Size 1 from 8 months to about 3, Size 2 from 3 to 7, Size 3 from 6 to 12. If the child is between sizes, a therapist can tell you which support matters more right now.

Why the Details Matter

Adjustable wings. A child who needs a lot of help today needs less in six months. The wings angle inward for a snug hold and outward for freedom, and move up and down to sit under the arms or at the ribs. Two hand wheels per wing.

The pommel. A child with low tone tends to pull the knees together or fall into a W-sit. The pommel keeps the thighs apart so the hips are in a stable, healthy position, and it slides to match leg length.

Floor level. Most adaptive seating lifts a child up and away from where other children are. The Corner Chair keeps them at eye level with the group, which is where the social and language learning happens. If you later need it raised, Smirthwaite's therapy ladder accepts it; ask us.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • It is a floor seat. The seat sits a few inches off the floor; the height figures in the table are the overall height of the back and wings, not seat height.
  • Supervision required. This is a therapy seat for a child who cannot yet sit safely alone; never leave the child unattended in it.
  • The pelvic strap is Velcro, quick for caregivers and easy for an older child to undo. If you need a buckle harness, ask us.
  • Color: stock chairs are Ocean Blue. Any other Just Color shade is a no-charge custom order, about 4–8 weeks; see the Colors section above.
  • Shipping: one carton by parcel, 22–31 lb, from Smirthwaite USA; arrives assembled.

Warranty

Smirthwaite covers the Corner Chair with a 2-year warranty from the date of delivery against defects in materials and workmanship. Accidental damage, misuse, and normal wear are not covered. Smirthwaite supports the chair with spares and service for a 12-year nominal service life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which size do I need?

Go by hip width and torso height, not age. Size 1 and Size 2 have the same 15.7" wide, 11.8" deep seat; Size 2 is taller for a longer back. Size 3 is wider (17.7") and deeper (13.8") for school-age children. As a rough guide: Size 1 for about 8 months to 3 years, Size 2 for 3 to 7, Size 3 for 6 to 12. A therapist can confirm.

What does a corner chair do that a regular seat doesn't?

It puts the child on the floor, where their friends and toys are, with padded support behind and on both sides so they cannot topple when they reach or lose focus. The pommel between the knees keeps the legs apart for a stable base. It is a therapy seat for building sitting balance, not a chair for restraint.

What adjusts?

The side wings move in height and angle, the headrest moves in height and width, and the pommel slides forward and back. All use hand wheels or a screwdriver; no special tools. The seat height is fixed per size.

Does it come with a strap?

Yes, a Velcro pelvic strap is standard. Overlap the Velcro at least 3" and check it each time the child sits down.

Can I add a tray?

Yes. The Corner Chair Table Tray is a freestanding 23.6" square table that straddles the chair and adjusts in height and angle. Tray Size 1 fits chair Sizes 1 and 2; Tray Size 2 fits chair Size 3. It is sold separately.

What colors are available?

Stock chairs are Ocean Blue vinyl. Any of Smirthwaite's 13 other Just Colour vinyl shades (including the Marigold yellow in the photos) can be ordered at no extra charge as a custom order, about 4–8 weeks. Call or email us to place a custom color order.
