A Folding Electric Wheelchair Light Enough to Lift Into the Car

The Feather Power Chair is a folding electric wheelchair that weighs just 33 pounds without its battery, and about 37 pounds with it. That is roughly half the weight of many folding power chairs, and it changes what is possible day to day. A spouse, adult child, or friend can fold it in seconds and lift it into a trunk, which means the chair can come along to the store, the doctor's office, a restaurant, or a family visit.

Feather Mobility built its name on the 13.5-pound Feather Chair manual wheelchair, and the Power Chair follows the same thinking: take out every ounce that is not needed, keep the parts that matter, and make it simple to use. You get a removable lithium battery, a joystick that can sit on either side, flip-back armrests, and a frame that folds in one piece with nothing to take apart.

Below you will find who this chair suits best, how it handles, what the battery and range really mean, and the full specifications so you can decide with confidence.

Who the Feather Power Chair Is Best For

  • Riders who need powered mobility but cannot lift or manage a heavier folding power chair
  • Couples and families where one person loads the chair into the car
  • Travelers, cruise passengers, and frequent flyers who want a chair that packs small and runs on a removable lithium battery
  • People living in apartments, condos, or homes without a garage, where a chair has to fit in a closet or corner
  • Anyone who mainly uses a wheelchair on sidewalks, in stores, and indoors, and wants a lighter chair for those trips

If you need to ride on grass, gravel, or rough ground often, need a seat wider than 18 inches, or weigh more than 250 pounds, a heavier-duty power chair will serve you better. We are glad to help you compare.

Folds in One Piece, Lifts With One Hand on Each Side

Most folding power chairs make you remove the battery, the seat, or the footrests before they fold. The Feather Power Chair folds as a single piece. Lift the two side seat handles, fold the back down, and the chair closes to 13 inches wide, 27 inches deep, and 28 inches tall. That fits across the back seat of most cars or stands upright in a trunk, closet, or hallway.

At 33 pounds, it weighs about the same as a large suitcase. The battery pops off in a moment if you want to lighten it further, and it is only about 4 pounds on its own.

Removable Lithium Battery, Charge It Anywhere

The 24-volt lithium-ion battery slides out of the chair, so you can charge it on the chair or carry it inside to an outlet while the chair stays in the car or garage. An off-board charger is included. Feather recommends a full overnight charge after a day of use.

A full charge gives you up to 11 miles of driving. In real life, range depends on your weight, the terrain, hills, and temperature, so plan on less for a hilly route or a cold day. For most people that is plenty for errands, appointments, and an afternoon out. If you travel long distances in a day, ask us about a second battery.

Flying with the Feather Power Chair. Feather states the chair is airline approved when used with the original Feather battery. Airlines set their own rules for lithium batteries, so always call your airline before you fly and tell them the battery's size. Never substitute a non-Feather battery for air travel.

Easy to Drive, Easy to Stop

A simple joystick controls speed and direction, with a top speed of 4 miles per hour, about a brisk walking pace. The joystick mounts on the right or left armrest and the mount can be moved, so the chair works for either hand. The controller's position and angle adjust to suit your reach.

Electromagnetic brakes hold the chair whenever you let go of the joystick, including on a slope. There is nothing to squeeze or remember. A 35-inch turning radius lets the chair turn around in a hallway, a store aisle, or a small kitchen.

If a caregiver needs to push the chair by hand, freewheel levers on each rear motor release the drive. Switch the power off first and use freewheel only on level ground, because the brakes are released too.

Comfort and Everyday Use

The seat is 18 inches wide and 16 inches deep, with a 1-inch cushion on the seat and back and nylon upholstery that wipes clean. Padded armrests flip back out of the way, so sliding in from a bed or a car seat is easier. The footrests swing to the side and lift off for transfers and for folding.

The seat sits 19 inches off the floor, a comfortable height for most adults to sit down and stand up. Solid polyurethane tires, 7 inches in front and 10 inches in back, never go flat and need no air. Three inches of ground clearance clears thresholds, sidewalk joints, and most door sills with ease.

What the Feather Power Chair Is Not Built For

Honest expectations make for happy owners. This is a light, compact chair, and some trade-offs come with that:

  • Terrain. It is designed for sidewalks, paved paths, stores, and indoors. Grass, gravel, sand, and deep snow are not recommended.
  • Hills. The rated climbing angle is 10 degrees, but Feather's manual advises staying on slopes under 5 degrees for stability. Go straight up and down, never sideways.
  • Capacity. The limit is 250 pounds including anything you carry. Keep baggage on the back under 10 pounds.
  • Riding in a vehicle. Never sit in the chair while a vehicle is moving. The chair is not approved for tie-down systems. Fold it, secure it, and ride in a vehicle seat.
  • Weather. Avoid rain, snow, and salt spray. If the chair gets wet, dry it thoroughly before storing.

Why We Chose This Product

Most of the folding power chairs we see weigh 50 to 60 pounds, and we hear the same story again and again: the chair is wonderful, but nobody in the house can lift it into the car, so it stays home. The Feather Power Chair exists to solve that one problem, and it does it without gimmicks. A 33-pound frame, a removable 4-pound battery, and a fold that takes seconds mean the chair actually gets used.

We also appreciate that Feather Mobility is a company that grew out of selling wheelchairs, not just manufacturing them. Their documentation is clear, the design is simple to live with, and the chair arrives assembled and ready to drive. For riders who mostly need a chair for errands, appointments, and getting out of the house, we think it is one of the most practical lightweight power chairs you can buy.
