Product Details

The Innovative Independence Sol Wheelchair Safety Light is a purpose-built visibility light designed to mount above a wheelchair user and help others see them more easily in crowded, dimly lit, and low-visibility environments. Its elevated illuminated loop provides visibility from multiple directions without requiring the user to hold or reposition a handheld light.

Sol offers steady and flashing light modes, tactile feedback, universal wheelchair mounts, and convenient USB-powered operation. Whether navigating a campus, attending class, traveling through a parking lot, or moving around the community after sunset, Sol provides a practical way to increase visibility and communicate more independently.

A Wheelchair Visibility Light Designed for Real Life

Wheelchair users often travel below the natural sightline of drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, instructors, and people moving through crowded public spaces. Sol raises an illuminated signal above the wheelchair so it can be noticed more easily from different directions.

This can be particularly helpful during:

  • Early-morning and evening travel
  • Crosswalk and sidewalk navigation
  • Parking-lot travel
  • School and university campus use
  • Crowded community events
  • Classroom participation
  • Indoor areas with limited lighting

Sol is an added visibility aid rather than a substitute for attentive travel, reflective clothing, wheelchair lighting, or established pedestrian-safety practices.

Steady and Flashing Light Modes

Sol provides two operating modes for different situations. The steady setting maintains a continuous illuminated signal for everyday visibility. The flashing setting creates a more noticeable signal when the user wants to draw attention.

The flashing mode can also provide an alternative way to signal an instructor, caregiver, companion, or another person. This makes Sol useful beyond outdoor travel, particularly for users who have difficulty raising a hand or making a conventional physical gesture.

Elevated Light for Greater All-Around Visibility

The illuminated loop sits above the wheelchair user rather than remaining close to the frame or wheels. This elevated position helps prevent the light from being hidden behind the wheelchair, nearby furniture, parked vehicles, or people in a crowd.

The frosted illuminated loop distributes light around the top of the device, creating a highly visible marker that can be noticed from multiple viewing angles.

Universal Wheelchair Mounting

Sol uses a universal mounting system intended to accommodate a range of wheelchair configurations. The mounting hardware secures the upright light to the back of the wheelchair, positioning it where it remains visible without occupying the user's hands or lap.

Wheelchairs vary considerably in frame shape, tubing, upholstery, seating systems, and rear-mounted equipment. Review the available mounting location before ordering, especially when the wheelchair has a rigid back shell, oxygen holder, headrest hardware, ventilator tray, backpack, or other rear accessory.

USB-Powered for Convenient Everyday Use

Sol operates through USB power, allowing it to connect to a compatible USB power source. This avoids dependence on uncommon disposable batteries and makes the light easier to incorporate into an everyday mobility routine.

Please note: Sol is described by the manufacturer as USB powered. Confirm that an appropriate USB power source is available on or near the wheelchair before use. Do not assume that a wheelchair's onboard charging port is compatible unless the wheelchair manufacturer permits accessories to be powered from it.

Tactile Feedback for Easier Operation

The controls provide tactile feedback so users can receive physical confirmation when operating the light. This thoughtful detail can be helpful when the controls are positioned outside the user's direct line of sight or when visual confirmation is inconvenient.

Actual independent operation will depend on the user's reach, hand function, mounting position, and wheelchair configuration. A caregiver or mobility professional may help determine the most accessible placement.

Designed by a Wheelchair User

Sol was developed by Carter Schott, a wheelchair user who recognized two recurring challenges in his own life: being visible to vehicles while crossing streets and attracting an instructor's attention when raising his hand was difficult.

Rather than adapting a bicycle light or general-purpose safety beacon, Schott developed a wheelchair-mounted system around the situations wheelchair users encounter at school, at work, outdoors, and throughout the community.

The product was refined through collaboration, pilot testing, and feedback from people with disabilities. This user-centered development process helped shape practical details such as the mounting system, light modes, tactile operation, and elevated illuminated loop.

Built for More Than Nighttime Travel

Although Sol can increase visibility in dark or low-light conditions, its usefulness is not limited to nighttime. The elevated light can also help a wheelchair user stand out in classrooms, lecture halls, stores, event spaces, transportation areas, and other crowded environments.

Examples of everyday use include:

  • Alerting an instructor during class
  • Helping companions locate the user in a crowd
  • Increasing visibility in parking areas
  • Traveling through a campus after sunset
  • Navigating shared sidewalks and paths
  • Attending concerts, conferences, and community events
  • Moving through dimly lit indoor spaces

Who the Sol Wheelchair Safety Light Is Best For

Sol may be a good choice for manual or power wheelchair users who want an elevated, hands-free visibility signal. It is especially relevant for students, commuters, active community members, and users who regularly travel in crowded or low-light environments.

It may also benefit users who have difficulty raising a hand, waving, holding a flashlight, or performing another conventional attention-getting gesture. Mounting compatibility and access to the controls should be evaluated for each individual wheelchair and user.
