Protekt Aire 9900 – True Low Air Loss Mattress System with Alternating Pressure and Pulsation, for Stage I–IV Pressure Injuries

The Protekt Aire 9900 is the top of Proactive Medical's air mattress range: a blower-driven system that combines true low air loss, alternating pressure, and pulsation in one mattress. It is built for people who already have pressure injuries, up to multiple stage IV wounds, or who are at the highest risk of developing them, and who need a surface that both moves pressure around and keeps the skin cool and dry.

The difference between the 9900 and a standard alternating-pressure mattress is the air. Most "low air loss" mattresses move 9 to 18 liters of air a minute through a small pump. The 9900's blower moves 1,275 liters per minute through the mattress and out through a vapor-permeable cover, pulling moisture and heat away from the skin continuously. A microcontroller watches the blower and holds whatever comfort pressure the caregiver sets, with the weight shown on an LED display.

It comes in five widths from a standard 36" to a 60" bariatric size, carries up to 1,000 lb in bariatric mode, and is covered by a two-year non-prorated warranty. Medicare code E0277.

At a Glance

  • Three therapies in one: true low air loss, alternating pressure, and pulsation, plus a static mode
  • 1,275 LPM blower, roughly 70 times the airflow of a standard low-air-loss pump
  • Alternating cycles of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 minutes; pulsation cycles from 1 to 20 minutes
  • Automatic Fowler mode: a sensor detects when the head of the bed is raised and boosts seat pressure by 20% so the user doesn't bottom out sitting up
  • Cell-on-cell design: a second layer of air cells keeps the user off the bed frame if the power fails
  • Alarms for power failure, low pressure, and service faults; settings are kept through an outage
  • Panel lock-out stops settings being changed by accident, with auto-lock after 30 seconds
  • Quick-release CPR valve at the head end
  • 5 widths (36", 42", 48", 54", 60"), all 80" long; 1,000 lb capacity in bariatric mode
  • Quilted nylon cover, fluid resistant and antimicrobial, machine washable
  • Optional foam raised rails or side air bolsters to help prevent roll-outs
  • 2-year non-prorated warranty on pump and mattress; Medicare code E0277

Who It's Best For

  • People with existing pressure injuries, including deep stage III and IV wounds, where a clinician has prescribed a low-air-loss or alternating-pressure surface
  • Anyone at very high risk: immobile, incontinent, or with moisture-related skin breakdown that a foam or basic alternating mattress hasn't controlled
  • Bariatric users up to 1,000 lb who need a therapy surface in a 42" to 60" width
  • Home care, hospice, and long-term care where one surface needs to handle prevention and treatment

How the Therapy Works

True low air loss. The blower pushes a constant stream of air through tiny openings in the mattress and out through the breathable cover. Skin stays cooler and drier, which matters because moisture and heat are what break skin down under pressure. "True" low air loss means the airflow is high enough to actually change the microclimate at the skin, not just leak a little air.

Alternating pressure. Eighteen air cells inflate and deflate in turn on the cycle you choose, so no part of the body carries weight for long. Three head cells stay static as a pillow. A caregiver checks the setting by sliding a hand under a deflated cell beneath the hips: there should be about an inch of clearance.

Pulsation. A gentler option for users who find full alternation uncomfortable: the mattress stays at a set pressure and oscillates on a 1-to-20-minute cycle, encouraging circulation without large movements.

Auto-Firm and Fowler. Press Auto-Firm and the mattress inflates fully for transfers, repositioning, or sitting up, then returns to the chosen therapy on its own. The Fowler sensor under the mattress does this automatically when the backrest passes about 20°, and goes to full firm above about 45°.

Choosing a Size and Rail Option

Match the width to the bed frame: 36" for a standard hospital bed, or 42", 48", 54", or 60" for bariatric beds. All are 80" long and 8" thick. Then choose a rail option:

  • None: the standard mattress, 8" high.
  • Foam raised rails: firm foam bolsters sewn into both edges, raising the sides to 11". A fixed, no-power way to discourage roll-outs. Available on every width.
  • Side air bolsters: inflatable bolsters along both edges, also 11" at the sides, that firm up with the mattress and can be let down for transfers. Available on 36", 42", and 48".
Size Standard Foam Raised Rails Side Air Bolsters Mattress Weight
36" × 80" × 8" 81090-36 81090-36RR 81090-36AB 15 lb
42" × 80" × 8" 81090-42 81090-42RR 81090-42AB 16 lb
48" × 80" × 8" 81090-48 81090-48RR 81090-48AB 17 lb
54" × 80" × 8" 81090-54 81090-54RR — 19 lb
60" × 80" × 8" 81090-60 81090-60RR — 20 lb

Rail versions measure 8" at the center and 11" at the sides. Weight capacity is 350 lb in standard mode and 1,000 lb in bariatric mode. Replacement pumps and mattress-only units are available; call us.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • Get the size from the bed, not the person. The mattress must match the frame width so the side rails work as intended and there are no gaps.
  • It replaces the mattress. The 9900 goes directly on the bed deck; don't put it on top of another mattress.
  • Keep it running. The pump must stay on while someone is on the mattress. Settings are stored through a power cut, and the cell-on-cell base keeps the user supported until power returns.
  • Not for unstable fractures. The manufacturer lists this as a contraindication; ask your clinician.
  • Charge the battery. After storage of three months or more, run the pump for six hours so the power-failure alarm works.
  • Cleaning: wipe the cover with mild detergent, or remove it and machine wash at 140°F; tumble dry low. Remove the Fowler sensor before washing.
  • Shipping: ships rolled in one carton with the pump; white-glove setup available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "true" low air loss mean?

It means enough airflow to actually cool and dry the skin. The 9900's blower moves 1,275 liters a minute, compared with 9 to 18 on a standard low-air-loss pump.

Which pressure injury stages is the Aire 9900 for?

Proactive rates it for stage I through multiple stage IV pressure ulcers, and for prevention in high-risk users. Your clinician should confirm the surface and settings.

What happens if the power goes out?

An alarm sounds for up to 20 minutes, the cell-on-cell base keeps the user off the frame, and the pump remembers its settings when power returns.

Does the Aire 9900 come in bariatric widths?

Yes: 36", 42", 48", 54", and 60" wide, all 80" long, rated to 1,000 lb in bariatric mode. Match the width to your bed frame.

What is the difference between foam raised rails and air bolsters?

Both raise the mattress edges to 11" to discourage roll-outs. Foam rails are fixed; air bolsters inflate with the mattress and can be let down for transfers.

Is the Protekt Aire 9900 covered by Medicare?

It carries Medicare code E0277, but Independent Living Superstore does not bill Medicare or insurance. You may be able to submit for reimbursement yourself.
