SuperHandy Knee Walker – A Crutch Alternative That Goes Outside

Crutches tire the arms and hands and leave nothing free to carry. A knee walker rests the injured lower leg on a padded platform, lets the other leg push, and keeps both hands on a set of handlebars. The SuperHandy Knee Walker does that on 12" solid all-terrain tires, so a trip to the mailbox or across a parking lot does not stop at the first crack in the sidewalk.

The aluminum frame weighs 16 lb, folds for the car, and is rated to 330 lb. The knee platform and handlebar both adjust in height so the hip stays level and the user stands upright rather than leaning. Rubber grips are comfortable over long use. Finished in orange.

  • Users who need to get around outdoors, not just inside the house
  • Heavier users: the 330 lb rating is higher than many knee walkers

Why the Details Matter

Why 12" tires matter. Most knee walkers roll on small hard wheels meant for smooth floors. They stop dead at a sidewalk crack or a gravel driveway. Twelve-inch tires roll over what small wheels catch on, and because they are solid there is nothing to inflate and nothing to puncture.

Set the knee platform height first. Stand next to the walker in walking shoes, bend the injured leg to 90°, and set the platform so the knee rests on it with the hips level and the standing leg straight. If the pad is too low the user leans to one side; too high and the standing leg cannot push comfortably.

Then set the handlebar. With the knee on the pad, the grips should sit about at wrist height with the user standing upright and elbows slightly bent. An upright posture is what keeps a knee walker from being hard on the back.

Know its limits. A knee walker needs a leg that can rest comfortably bent at the knee, and it is not for stairs. Ask the treating physician or therapist whether a knee walker is appropriate for the specific injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should use a knee walker instead of crutches?

Someone recovering from a foot, ankle, or lower-leg injury who has been told to keep weight off that leg and whose knee can bend comfortably to rest on the pad. Ask the treating physician first.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes. The 12" solid all-terrain tires roll over sidewalk cracks, grass, and gravel that small hard wheels stop at, and they cannot go flat.

What is the weight capacity?

330 lb.

How much does it weigh and does it fold?

16 lb, and yes, it folds for the trunk or a closet.

How do I set the heights?

Set the knee platform so the injured knee rests on it bent at about 90° with the hips level, then set the handlebar so the grips are about at wrist height with the user standing upright.

Can it be used on stairs?

No. A knee walker is for level ground and ramps.
