Chariot III K3 Lightweight Wheelchair with Elevating Legrests – Raise a Leg, Keep the Weight Down

The Chariot III is Proactive Medical's K3 lightweight manual wheelchair, and this is the version with elevating legrests: padded calf pads and footplates that lift and lock anywhere from footrest position to nearly straight out. It is the chair to choose after knee or hip surgery, for a leg in a cast, or for anyone whose legs swell when they hang down all day.

Under the legrests is the same chair as our swing-away Chariot III: a 36 lb steel frame in silver vein, flip-back, height-adjustable armrests for side transfers, and a dual axle that lowers the seat from 19.5" to 17.5" for foot propulsion. Choose a 16", 18", or 20" seat and desk or full-length arms. A 2" seat extension, anti-tippers, and chart pocket are included.

Elevating or Swing-Away?

Elevating legrests add about 4 lb per pair over swing-away footrests and make the chair longer when raised, so they are the right choice only when a leg actually needs to be lifted. If the user simply needs somewhere to rest their feet, the Chariot III with Swing-Away Footrests is lighter and more compact. The legrests here still swing to the side and lift off for standing transfers.

Which Chariot Is Right?

The Chariot II is the economy K2 standard chair at about 42 lb. This Chariot III is the K3 lightweight with flip-back arms and seat extension. The Chariot IV moves to an aluminum frame with quick-release wheels, and the Chariot IV XTC adds a detachable back and 22" seat. If the user also needs to recline, see the Chariot-RC, which comes with elevating legrests and a reclining back.

Good to Know Before You Buy

• Measure hip width seated, then add about 2" for the seat width. Overall width is 8" more than the seat, so a 20" seat is a 28" chair; check doorways.
• Raised legrests add length. With a leg fully elevated the chair is roughly a foot longer; plan for tight hallways and elevators.
• Desk or full arms. Desk-length arms pull under a table; full-length arms give more to push on when standing.
• Hemi height is a setting. Any Chariot III can be set to 17.5" by moving the rear axle.
• Cushion not included. Most daily users add a seat cushion; see our wheelchair cushions.
• Shipping: ships folded in one carton by parcel; light assembly (attach legrests).

Proactive Medical covers the Chariot III with a 3-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase. Upholstery, tires, and other wear items, and damage from misuse, are not covered.
