Combi Toileting Chair by Smirthwaite – One Supportive Chair for Potty Training, Toileting, and Everyday Sitting

The Combi is Smirthwaite's toileting chair for children who need a little support to sit well. Built on the same wooden frame as the Heathfield, it works three ways: as an everyday supportive chair with its upholstered seat in place, as a potty chair for a child just starting toilet training, and as a commode chair with a lidded bucket for a child who has moved on from the potty. The seat height and depth adjust, the arms adjust, and a pelvic strap is standard, so one chair carries a child from the first days of toilet training through to independence.

Because it is a proper chair rather than a plastic potty, the Combi gives a child the stable, supported sitting position that makes toileting easier: feet down, hips back, trunk upright, hands free to hold a rail. That stability matters as much at home as it does in a nursery, school, or therapy bathroom, and the chair's anti-microbial wooden frame is designed for exactly those shared settings.

Smirthwaite has designed and built pediatric equipment in Devon, England, since 1986, working with therapists, parents, and children to keep its products simple, well made, and easy to live with.

Who It's Best For

  • Children with mild to moderate support needs who are starting, or struggling with, toilet training
  • Kids who can't sit safely on a standard potty or toilet seat without help, but don't need a full positioning system
  • Families who want one chair that will still be the right chair two or three years from now
  • Nurseries, schools, and therapy rooms that need a toileting chair for more than one child

If your child needs the same support for classroom and mealtime sitting but not for toileting, the Heathfield is the same chair without the commode. For bath-time support, see the Bath Corner Chair.

Three Ways to Use It

Everyday chair. With the upholstered seat cushion in place, the Combi is a supportive wooden chair for meals, play, and activities, much like the Heathfield. The pelvic strap keeps the hips back in the seat.

Potty chair. Lift out the seat cushion and the molded potty seat sits on top of the commode opening. A strap at the back holds the potty so it can't tip when the child stands up. This is the setting for a child who is just starting toilet training.

Commode chair. Remove the potty and the plastic commode seat is ready to use, with the lidded bucket underneath. The bucket has a carry handle for emptying. This is the setting for a child who has outgrown the potty but still needs a supportive seat.

A Natural Choice

Smirthwaite builds the Combi from solid wood because it's warm to the touch, hard to damage, and doesn't look clinical in a family bathroom. The timber comes from sustainable sources, and the finish has anti-microbial agents added during manufacture, so the frame wipes clean and stays hygienic even with daily toileting use in a shared nursery or school. The upholstery is chosen for the same reason: it contains antibacterial agents that work against MRSA, E. coli, and other common bacteria.

Colors

Stock chairs ship in blue vinyl with a natural wood finish. Any other color from Smirthwaite's Just Colour vinyl range can be ordered at no extra charge; custom colors are made to order and take about 4–8 weeks. Call or email us to order a custom color. Built to Be Tailored

The chair itself adjusts in seat height and seat depth, and the arms adjust in height, so one size covers a couple of years of growth. A hook-and-loop pelvic strap is included and should always be used.

Everything else is an accessory, chosen with your child's therapist and added on this page. For toileting, the most useful are a footrest or footboard so the feet are planted (children relax and bear down more easily with their feet supported), skis to keep the chair from tipping as a child pushes up to stand, the toggle handrail for something to hold, and the splash guard, which fits onto the handrail. For everyday use there is a wooden tray, and pelvic cushions narrow the seat for a smaller child. Each accessory is sized to the chair, so pick the one that matches your chair size.

Choosing the Right Size

Measure your child seated with feet flat: seat height is floor to the back of the knee, seat depth is the back of the hips to the back of the knee (less about an inch), and seat width is across the hips with a little room to spare. Choose the size whose ranges include those numbers now, with room to grow. Your child's therapist can confirm the fit, or call us at (844) 795-2930 and we'll walk through it with you.

What's Included

  • Combi chair in your chosen size, with height-adjustable arms
  • Upholstered seat cushion
  • Molded plastic potty seat
  • Plastic commode seat
  • Lidded commode bucket with carry handle
  • Hook-and-loop pelvic strap

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • Work with your child's therapist. A PT or OT can confirm the size and tell you which accessories will help with toileting and which won't.
  • Stock status: all four sizes are stock items at Smirthwaite USA and ship fully assembled, so orders normally go out within days rather than weeks. Accessories may add lead time (typically 4–8 weeks).
  • Upholstery color: stock chairs come in blue. Thirteen other colors are available at no extra charge as custom orders (about 4–8 weeks); see the Colors section above.
  • Splash guard needs the handrail. The splash guard mounts on the toggle handrail, so order both if you want it.
  • Feet first. Most therapists recommend a footrest, footboard, or footplate for toileting so the child can plant their feet.
  • Always use the pelvic strap, and never leave a child unattended in the chair.
