Hardrock Chair by Smirthwaite – Heavy-Duty Postural Seating for Children and Adults Who Rock
The Hardrock is the chair Smirthwaite builds for one specific job: giving a child, teen, or adult who rocks repetitively a seat that won't tip, won't loosen, and won't wear out. Many standard classroom and therapy chairs simply can't take continuous, forceful rocking. The Hardrock is built to, with a heavy solid-wood frame, an anti-thrust seat and anterior pad that keep the pelvis back where it belongs, and a low, wide base that stays planted. The result is a defined, secure personal space where someone who seeks movement can still settle, focus, and take part.
It is a favorite in special-education classrooms and at home for individuals with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and sensory-seeking behaviors, and it provides moderate postural support for anyone who has trouble holding a seated position on their own. Optional thoracic supports and stabilizers extend that support to users who move sideways as well as back and forth.
Smirthwaite has designed and built postural seating in Devon, England, since 1986. The Hardrock is one of its most established products, now extended with a Size 5 that carries up to 331 lb for larger teens and adults.

Who It's Best For
- Children, teens, and adults who rock, bounce, or push back forcefully in a chair, and have broken or outgrown ordinary seating
- Individuals with autism, ADHD, or sensory-processing differences who focus better inside a defined, secure space
- Users who need moderate postural support: a stable pelvis and a clear seating boundary, without a full custom seating system
- Classrooms, day programs, and therapy rooms that need one chair tough enough for daily use by active users
If your child needs gentle everyday support but doesn't rock hard, the lighter Heathfield or Brookfield may be the better fit. If you aren't sure, call us and we'll talk it through.
How It Holds a Rocker Still
Anti-thrust seat. The seat is shaped with a raised front section and a contoured anti-thrust cushion. When the user pushes back and down, the seat shape resists the pelvis sliding forward, so the hips stay at the back of the seat instead of creeping toward the edge.
Anterior pad and pelvic strap. A padded buckle pelvic strap holds the pelvis in place from the front. It threads through cam locks under the seat, so it can't be worked loose from inside the chair, and the buckle and tri-glide let a caregiver set the fit in seconds. A four-point pelvic strap is available for users who need more control.
Low, wide, heavy base. Sizes 2 and 3 sit on a ski transporter base: wide wooden skis with an integrated footboard and small rear wheels, so an empty chair can be tilted and wheeled, but an occupied one stays put. Sizes 4 and 5 sit on a mobile base with four locking casters and a push handle so staff can move a seated adult between rooms; brakes on, it is just as planted.
Side-to-side control, when needed. Slotted upholstery on the backrest accepts height- and width-adjustable thoracic supports for users who lean or lurch sideways. Optional stabilizers are telescoping legs that drop to the floor on the mobile-base chairs to widen the footprint further.

Built to Last
Every Hardrock is made from solid, sustainably sourced timber with a wipe-clean finish, and the frame is screwed together rather than clipped, so the adjustments stay where a therapist set them. The seat height and depth are locked with eight screws, armrests with two, and the tray with plunger pins. Nothing on the chair is meant to be moved by the person sitting in it. The frame wipes clean with soap and water or an antibacterial spray, the upholstery wipes down, and the pelvic strap can go through a cool machine wash. Smirthwaite rates the chair for a seven-year service life with annual checks.
Colors
Stock chairs ship in blue Deluxe fabric with a natural wood finish. Purple Deluxe fabric (shown in the photos) and any color from Smirthwaite's Just Colour vinyl range can be ordered at no extra charge; custom colors are made to order and take about 4–8 weeks. Call or email us to order a custom color. Colors shown are a guide only; material samples are available on request.

Built to Be Tailored
The chair itself adjusts in seat height, seat depth, and armrest height, so one size covers several years of growth. The tray, pelvic strap, anti-thrust cushion, and base are included on every chair.
Everything else is an accessory, chosen with your therapist and added on this page. For positioning, a molded pelvic support keeps the hips centered and a pommel keeps the knees apart. For sideways rockers, stabilizers widen the base of a mobile-base chair. For the tray, padded inserts (top or underneath) soften it, and front, rear, and side retaining straps keep it locked on under hard use. Stabilizers and tray accessories are factory fitted, so decide on those before you order. Other Smirthwaite options such as thoracic supports, a footplate, heel huggies, and a four-point strap can be special-ordered; call us.
Choosing the Right Size
Measure the user seated with feet flat: seat height is floor to the back of the knee, seat depth is the back of the hips to the back of the knee (less about an inch), and seat width is across the hips with a little room to spare. Choose the size whose ranges include those numbers now, with room to grow, and check the weight limit. Your therapist can confirm the fit, or call us at (844) 795-2930 and we'll walk through it with you.

Good to Know Before You Buy
- Work with a therapist. The Hardrock is meant to be set up and adjusted by a PT or OT. Seat height and depth are locked with screws and aren't user-adjustable, which is the point: once set, a rocker can't undo them.
- Heavy by design. Chairs weigh 77–132 lb and ship by freight on a pallet with lift-gate delivery. Plan on two people to unbox and position it.
- Transporter base is for empty chairs. On sizes 2 and 3, never move the chair with someone in it. If you need to wheel a seated user, call us about the mobile base upgrade.
- Factory-fitted items. Stabilizers and the tray inserts and straps are fitted at the factory, so add them to your chair order rather than later.
- Stock status: all four sizes are stock items at Smirthwaite USA. Accessories typically add about 4 weeks.
- Upholstery color: stock chairs come in blue Deluxe fabric. Purple, or any of the 14 Just Colour vinyl colors, is a no-charge custom order (about 4–8 weeks); see the Colors section above.
- Indoor use on flat, level floors only. Always fasten the pelvic strap, and never leave a user unattended in the chair.

Warranty
Smirthwaite covers the Hardrock with a 2-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. Upholstery, straps, and other wear items, and damage from misuse, are not covered. Smirthwaite recommends an annual service check (every six months under heavy daily use) to keep the chair safe and the warranty valid.
