Protekt Steel Rollator – Sturdy, Simple, and Rated to 350 lb

The Protekt Steel Rollator is Proactive Medical's everyday four-wheel walker: a powder-coated steel frame with a padded flip-up seat, a removable curved backrest, loop-style locking hand brakes, and a zippered pouch under the seat. It folds flat with the built-in strap and stands on its own when folded.

At 17 lb it is four pounds heavier than the aluminum version, and that weight buys a 350 lb capacity and a planted feel on the floor that many users prefer. Handle height adjusts from 31" to 36.5"; 6" soft-grip wheels suit indoor floors, sidewalks, and stores. Choose red or blue.

Limited lifetime warranty on the frame.

  • Home use where the rollator mostly stays indoors or goes to the car occasionally

  • Anyone who wants the most rollator for the least money
  • Users who feel steadier with a slightly heavier frame under their hands

Which Protekt Rollator Is Right?

Proactive makes four Protekt rollators and the differences are simple. The Aluminum is the lightest at 13 lb and rated to 300 lb; pick it if the user lifts it into a car. The Steel is 17 lb, rated to 350 lb, and costs less; pick it for home use and a sturdier feel. The Steel Knock-Down is the same chair shipped in a smaller carton that you assemble without tools. The Bariatric is wider and taller with 8" wheels and a 500 lb rating.

Why the Details Matter

Steel versus aluminum. Steel is heavier and costs less. The extra 4 lb is the difference between a frame rated to 300 lb and one rated to 350 lb, and some users simply like a heavier rollator because it doesn't skitter when they lean on it. If the user lifts it into a car every day, consider the Aluminum model instead.

Set the handle height right. Stand upright in walking shoes with arms hanging naturally; the hand grips should meet the crease of the wrist. Too high and the shoulders hunch; too low and the user leans forward and loses balance. Loosen the knobs, slide the handles, retighten.

Loop brakes do two jobs. Squeeze the loops to slow down on a slope; push them down until they click to lock the wheels before sitting on the seat or standing up from a chair. Never sit on the seat with the brakes unlocked.

The seat is for resting, not riding. Turn around, lock both brakes, sit facing away from the direction of travel so the backrest is behind you. A rollator seat lets a user who tires easily walk farther because a rest is always available.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • Check the handle range. 31"–36.5" suits most adults from about 5'0" to 6'2". Measure floor to wrist crease standing upright.
  • 18" between the grips is a little narrower than the aluminum model's 20"; a broad user may prefer the Aluminum or Bariatric.
  • 6" wheels are right for indoors, sidewalks, and stores. For gravel or grass, an 8" wheel (Bariatric model) rolls easier.
  • Ships assembled except for the backrest and handle height. If you'd rather have a smaller carton and assemble it yourself, the Steel Knock-Down is the same rollator.
  • Shipping: one carton by parcel, 20.5 lb.

Warranty

Proactive Medical covers the Protekt Steel Rollator frame with a limited lifetime warranty to the original purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship. Wheels, brake cables, hand grips, upholstery, and the pouch are wear items and are not covered, nor is damage from misuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Steel and Aluminum Protekt rollators?

The Steel weighs 17 lb and is rated to 350 lb; the Aluminum weighs 13 lb and is rated to 300 lb. Seat height, handle range, wheels, brakes, and backrest are the same. Steel costs less; aluminum is easier to lift into a car.

What is the Knock-Down version?

The same rollator shipped in a smaller carton with the wheels and handles off. You assemble it in about ten minutes without tools. Choose it if a smaller box is easier for you to receive or store.

How do I set the handle height?

Stand upright in your usual shoes with arms relaxed at your sides. The grips should be level with the crease of your wrist. Loosen the knob on each handle, slide to that height, and retighten. Both sides must match.

How do the brakes work?

Squeeze the loop handles to slow down. Push them down until they click to lock the wheels; lift to release. Always lock both brakes before sitting on the seat.

Can I sit on it to rest?

Yes. Lock both brakes, turn around, and sit facing away from the direction you were walking, with the backrest behind you. It is a resting seat, not a transport chair.

Does it fold?

Yes. Pull the strap in the middle of the seat and the frame folds side to side; it stands on its own when folded. The backrest pops off with two buttons if you need it flatter.
