Protekt Steel Rollator (Knock-Down) – Same Rollator, Smaller Box, Ten Minutes to Build

The Protekt Steel Rollator Knock-Down is Proactive Medical's steel rollator shipped flat: the wheels, handles, and backrest come off the frame so it fits a carton about two-thirds the size of the assembled version. You put it together in ten minutes with no tools; every fastener is a hand knob.

Once built it is the Protekt Steel Rollator in every respect: powder-coated steel frame, 350 lb capacity, padded flip-up seat with a removable curved backrest, loop-style locking brakes, under-seat pouch, and 6" soft-grip wheels. Handle height adjusts 31"–36.5". Choose red or blue.

Limited lifetime warranty on the frame.

Which Protekt Rollator Is Right?

Proactive makes four Protekt rollators and the differences are simple. The Aluminum is the lightest at 13 lb and rated to 300 lb; pick it if the user lifts it into a car. The Steel is 17 lb, rated to 350 lb, and costs less; pick it for home use and a sturdier feel. The Steel Knock-Down is the same chair shipped in a smaller carton that you assemble without tools. The Bariatric is wider and taller with 8" wheels and a 500 lb rating.

Why the Details Matter

What knock-down means. KD is the industry term for a product shipped unassembled. Here it means the two rear wheel assemblies, the two handle posts, and the backrest are packed beside the folded frame. Each slides into place and tightens with a knob you turn by hand.

Set the handle height right. Stand upright in walking shoes with arms hanging naturally; the hand grips should meet the crease of the wrist. Too high and the shoulders hunch; too low and the user leans forward and loses balance. Loosen the knobs, slide the handles, retighten.

Loop brakes do two jobs. Squeeze the loops to slow down on a slope; push them down until they click to lock the wheels before sitting on the seat or standing up from a chair. Never sit on the seat with the brakes unlocked.

The seat is for resting, not riding. Turn around, lock both brakes, sit facing away from the direction of travel so the backrest is behind you. A rollator seat lets a user who tires easily walk farther because a rest is always available.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • Assembly is easy but it is assembly. If the user lives alone and would struggle with hand knobs, order the standard Protekt Steel, which arrives built.
  • Tighten the wheel knobs firmly and recheck them after the first week of use.
  • Check the handle range. 31"–36.5" suits most adults from about 5'0" to 6'2".
  • 6" wheels are right for indoors, sidewalks, and stores. For gravel or grass, an 8" wheel (Bariatric model) rolls easier.
  • Shipping: one compact carton by parcel, 21 lb.

Warranty

Proactive Medical covers the Protekt Steel Rollator (Knock-Down) frame with a limited lifetime warranty to the original purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship. Wheels, brake cables, hand grips, upholstery, and the pouch are wear items and are not covered, nor is damage from misuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is it to assemble?

About ten minutes and no tools. Unfold the frame, slide each rear wheel assembly into its leg and tighten the knob, slide the handle posts in and set the height, snap on the backrest. The manual has pictures for each step.

Is it the same as the regular Protekt Steel Rollator once built?

Yes. Same frame, seat, brakes, wheels, 350 lb capacity, and warranty. The only difference is how it arrives.

Why would I choose this over the assembled one?

A smaller carton. It is easier to receive at an apartment, mailroom, or rural address, and easier to store if you are buying ahead or for a facility.

How do I set the handle height?

Stand upright in your usual shoes with arms relaxed at your sides. The grips should be level with the crease of your wrist. Loosen the knob on each handle post, slide to that height, and retighten. Both sides must match.

How do the brakes work?

Squeeze the loop handles to slow down. Push them down until they click to lock the wheels; lift to release. Always lock both brakes before sitting on the seat.

Does it fold after assembly?

Yes. Pull the strap in the middle of the seat and the frame folds side to side for the car or a closet. You don't take it apart again.
